The American Rose Society annually presents the Silver Honor Medal Award to a member of each of the affiliated Districts across the United States. This is the most prestigious ARS award given in honor of those singled out for outstanding service to their Local Rose Societies, the respective Districts and ARS. Consideration is given to those who serve these three levels of our rose family with distinction, but service to their Districts earns special consideration.

Those who receive this award are customarily strong supporters of their Local Societies and it is common that they receive the ARS Bronze Medal Award for their outstanding service. They earned the award, not only for their attendance of Local Society meetings but for their participation in local rose care and culture demonstrations, the writing of articles for publication in local and other far-reaching publications, the delivery of programs to garden clubs, other Rose Societies, etc. Such dedication of efforts to rose growing excellence can lead to receipt of the honor given to Consulting Rosarians, the Outstanding Consulting Rosarian Award. And the next level of achievement is signified by receiving the title of Master Rosarian.

Active Rose Exhibitor

It is customary that recipients of this award are active rose exhibitors at rose shows throughout wide areas. And it is quite common that they share their exhibiting excellence by becoming accredited Rose Judges.

Our Silver Honor Medal Awardee this evening is always available for participation in functions of the Local Societies, the South Central District and the ARS. He has served on the faculties of several Consulting Rosarian and Rose Judging Schools. Furthermore, he serves on two American Rose Center committees, and not surprisingly, he has Chaired an ARS National Convention. He has even served in leadership positions on multiple Local Rose Societies! Oh, and by the way, he has time to care for over 250 roses in his home garden, not to mention the time he has devoted to public rose gardens and demonstration projects.

If we need further confirmation of the worthiness of our 2012 Silver Honor Medal winner this evening} I might add that he has performed leadership roles in every event and project that I have mentioned tonight, and has received all those awards that I noted. Is that not impressive? Does this not emphasize the diligence and energy that is required to receive the Silver Honor Medal Award.

And is there a single one of you out there who hasn't guessed who our deserving winner is tonight? Of course not, he is The South Central District’s energy bunny — CLAUDE GRAVES!
